Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Adolescents

Adolescent therapy is a specialised area of psychotherapy which is tailored to meet the specific and unique needs of young people and this is offered both in-person and online. My focus is helping adolescents cope with a diverse range of emotional, behavioural and mental health issues that may arise during what is an important stage of development. Adolescence is a time of change, with the adolescent brain, body and emotions undergoing many changes. During adolescence, one’s social and academic world is expanding and adolescents are tasked with navigating many new experiences. More, this process can be challenging, leading to stress, anxiety, depression and a range of mental health challenges.

Through therapy, I provide the adolescent with a safe space to explore these challenges free of judgement. I teach coping strategies and tools to navigate difficulty; both now and for the future, as they transition into adulthood.

A common question I get is: “Are you neurodivergent-informed?” The answer is yes. I have extensive experience supporting teens and children, including three years working in schools with kids on the autism spectrum, and my training in adolescent therapy has given me an insight into understanding the unique ways neurodivergent individuals experience the world. This informs how I structure therapy to be practical, inclusive, and tailored to each person’s needs. Many neurodivergent teens experience low mood and anxiety but are underrepresented in therapy, which is why I aim to create an accessible, supportive space that meets their needs.

How does it work?

The first session when I work with an adolescent typically involves an initial family assessment appointment. This 50-minute session is offered to the parent(s)/guardian(s) and the adolescent together. The purpose of this family appointment is to help me obtain important insight into the adolescent’s strengths, important family history, relevant environmental factors, reasons you are seeking therapy at this time.

This session aims to provide me with an overview of your family’s dynamics, parenting styles. The family assessment session offers everyone an opportunity to meet me, ask questions and have an understanding regarding how the the therapy process works. Sometimes, the initial appointment can be a bit daunting and this initial appointment ensures that everyone is aware of the process and comfortable with my approach.
